Daytona 500 is considered one of the most important stages of the famous NASCAR racing in America.

The beginning

The long stretch of coastline in Daytona makes it ideal for drivers to test the limits of automotive engine power. From 1904 to 1935, there were 15 ground speed records established here.

Bill France, owner of a gas station in Washington D.C. quickly realized that the annual Daytona gathering could be more than just a beach race. In the mid-50s, he started building an unprecedented large motor racing track, 2.5 miles long.

Daytona international track

Built back to the mainland, several kilometers from the famous beach on the beach, the new track had a high edge, allowing drivers to run at full speed without worrying about being thrown off the road. The first race was held when construction was completed in 1959.

Memorable events

In 1970, a team of engineers experimented with the rear spoiler design. In 1984, Cale Yarborough became the first driver to reach a top speed of more than 200 miles per hour.

The most memorable event in Daytona in 1979 was probably the collision on the track, between Cale Yarborough (lying on the ground) and Bobby Allison. Yarborough and his brother Allison fiercely vied for the lead until they crashed into each other in the final lap. Leaving the car lying on the lawn, the two began to blame each other. Scuffing happened when Bobby broke into his brother’s side.

The shape and design of the Daytona racetrack provide an ideal environment for drivers to test speed. However, it is also because of the frequent occurrence of cars crashing into each other at a curve, when every car wants to move forward, as was the case in 1990.

Many consider Dale Earnhardt the greatest racer of his generation even though he was unfortunately killed on the Daytona track. During his career, Earnhardt has won 76 races. Although he won only once at the Daytona 500 in 1998, he was highly regarded by professionals. However, in 2001 he crashed on the track and died. This is the great loss of the motorsport world.
